"Each time the needle pierces the cloth, stitch-by-stitch the cloth absorbs the intentions of the maker while the knots lock these thoughts into place..." Jasleen Dhamija
"...no sensible woman will suffer her intellectual pursuits to clash with her domestic duties." Mrs S.L. Dagg
"The needle is used to repair damage: it is as if it apologizes, without hurting as pins do." Louise Bourgeois
"Playing house" stems from a sense of solitude and the need to create a dialogue and a narrative with objects around me. I often use stitching/ embroidery in my work; piercing the fabric allows me to create a physical and emotional link with it, something that was especially important within this series. Each piece of fabric is specific, depending on its history which I either KNOW to be true or which it tells me through the evidence of a previous life; the mending of the holes, the stains, the wrinkles. I enjoy playing house/ ama de la casa and am, essentially, performing a parody of what that is supposed to mean; not only by embroidering and folding, but by playing and toying with (often banal) everyday thoughts and ideas that surround us. Some of the embroidered phrases are personal to me while others are inspired by thinkers, and daytime TV shows. Stitching feels permanent. The sentences are written in white because there isnt a NEED for them to be seen, but there they are, permanently stitched into the fabric.
